Sunflowers

Planting sunflower seeds is a perfect way to introduce children to gardening and it's a fun way for them to learn how plants and flowers grow. I had been planning on planting some sunflower seeds with the kids so when the nice people at gettingpersonal.co.uk sent me a Grow It: Sunflowers Gift Box it was the perfect opportunity to get green fingered!

The Sunflowers Gift Box has everything you need to get started, it includes five coir pots, five coir compost discs, three different packets of sunflower seeds, five lollipop sticks and a really useful instruction booklet which has tips and information about planting and caring for sunflowers. I have never seen coir before, it is a biodegradable material that can be used inside or planted outside in the garden, when you add water to the compost discs they turn into compost.

My 22 month old daughter was really excited about helping and it was a really simple activity for her to do. She put a coir disc in each pot and watched while I added the water. The discs rapidly expanded and as if by magic turn into compost, I was amazed!

My daughter then put a sunflower seed in each pot and I helped her push them into the compost. I don't think she really understood why we were doing it but she had fun getting her hands messy anyway! I'll get her to help me water the seeds and I think she'll be excited to see little seedlings start to grow in the pots.

The seeds we planted in the pots were giant sunflower seeds and the other two packets in the gift box were dwarf sunflowers and sunflower sunspot seeds, I planted these outside in the borders in front of our garden fence and I'm looking forward to a wall of pretty yellow flowers in a few months time.

The Grow It: Sunflowers Gift Box has everything you need to get started and is a lovely present for big kids and little kids and I think it would also make a lovely alternative Easter present. Happy planting!

  1. Lovely! It's so important to get children connected to nature in all it's forms. If they understand the nature of the earth, they are more likely to help preserve it! :)

    1. That's very true Ross! I think my daughter will really love seeing the plants grow and she can help me plant them in the garden and see them getting bigger. She loves watering the plants too so she's learning all the time. Thanks for commenting! :)

  2. Wow, that pack looks really exciting! I would love something like this when Luke is a little older. I feel at 19 months he'd watch the little disks expanding, but wouldn't full appreciate the magic there! He has planted seeds though and I think we may plant some more soon. Your little girl looks like she's having so much fun. What a brill idea and great post! Ray xx @ lukeosaurusandme.blogspot.co.uk #MBPW

    1. Thanks Rachael! My daughter is 22 months and I think she's a bit young too to really know what was going on but she seemed really interested in it. I can recommend the sunflowers pack though for Luke when he's older I'm sure he'd love it! :)
